Development of Anti-corrosion Coatings

  Development of Anti-corrosion Coatings

  1. Products are evolving toward multi-functionality.

According to incomplete statistics, China has more than 1,000 types of anti-corrosion coatings. Traditionally, these coatings are classified according to their resin types, including epoxy, epoxy asphalt, asphalt, chlorinated rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride acetate, phenolic resin, ethyl silicate, highly chlorinated polyethylene, polyurethane, polyurethane asphalt, phenolic, and alkyd paints, among others.

In recent years, a number of high-performance modified resin-based anticorrosive coatings have emerged, such as alkyd resin-modified polysulfide rubber-modified epoxy waterproof and anticorrosive coatings, as well as acrylic-modified alkyd magnetic paints used for railway passenger car bodies. At the same time, China has developed its own distinctive anticorrosive coatings, including phenolic-titanium, phenolic-epoxy, and phenolic-silicone heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings. Starting in the 1990s, a new generation of anticorrosive coating systems has gradually become the mainstream in both research and application. Environmentally friendly anticorrosive coatings, such as waterborne epoxy and waterborne acrylic coatings, have been introduced one after another, greatly enriching the variety of anticorrosive coatings and progressively moving them toward multifunctionality.

  2. Broad market demand and wide range of applications

China has a large number of anti-corrosion coating manufacturers—according to incomplete statistics, there are roughly 700 such companies. Among them, nearly 100 specialize exclusively in the production of anti-corrosion coatings; however, most of these companies are relatively small in scale, with only a few dozen having an annual output exceeding 1,000 tons. These manufacturing enterprises are mainly concentrated in coastal provinces and cities across China, as well as in the central-south region. Due to differences in natural environments and development characteristics among various provinces and cities, the types and applications of anti-corrosion coatings used in heavy-duty corrosion protection also vary considerably.

Currently, anti-corrosion coatings in China are primarily used in the chemical and petroleum industries, railways, highway bridges, the metallurgical industry, the power and energy sector, the machinery and textile industries, industrial product manufacturing, as well as the automotive, shipbuilding, and container industries. Among these sectors, the chemical and petroleum industries represent the largest demand, covering corrosion protection for oilfield facilities, oil pipelines, offshore platforms, and the steel and reinforced concrete structures of petrochemical plants. At the same time, the construction and maintenance of railway and highway bridges also constitute key areas for the application of anti-corrosion coatings. Furthermore, the industrial products sector and marine corrosion protection fields—such as automobiles and ships—are major growth drivers in the anti-corrosion coating market.

  3. Environmentally friendly anti-corrosion coatings are attracting much attention.

Currently, China's anti-corrosion coatings are moving forward in the direction of high performance, high efficiency, low energy consumption, and low pollution. Moreover, some manufacturers of water-based anti-corrosion coatings have adopted low-pollution raw materials in their production processes. Anti-corrosion coating companies have already phased out various paint raw materials that were previously banned, replacing them with more environmentally friendly products, thereby achieving the goals of energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental friendliness.

We believe that in the coming years, ship coatings, oil-platform coatings, container coatings, anti-corrosion coatings for chemical industries, railway coatings, highway and bridge coatings, anti-corrosion coatings for steel structures, and coatings for urban infrastructure will continue to be hot market segments. Domestic anti-corrosion coating enterprises should constantly enhance their professional expertise, provide high-quality products, and deliver comprehensive services, thereby making greater efforts and contributions to China’s anti-corrosion market.

  4. Marine anti-corrosion coatings are growing rapidly.

Today, the scale of marine development continues to expand, and as a fundamental infrastructure for marine development, cross-sea bridges are being built at an ever-increasing pace. These marine structures all require long-lasting anti-corrosion performance, which will create a huge market for marine anti-corrosion coatings. Moreover, with the large-scale development of offshore oilfields, pipelines for transporting oil and gas are also emerging one after another. In recent years, China has significantly accelerated the construction of port infrastructure, and the country is actively planning and building offshore wind power projects—all of which are bringing new growth opportunities to the marine anti-corrosion coatings market. Currently, Chinese manufacturers of marine anti-corrosion coatings are trending toward developing eco-friendly, resource-efficient, and high-performance coatings. In the future, we can expect the development of multifunctional anti-corrosion coatings that offer features such as high-temperature resistance, antistatic properties, high elasticity, and non-toxicity. According to industry insiders, driven by factors including the shipbuilding and container manufacturing industries, the construction of cross-sea bridges, offshore oil platforms, and coastal ports, China’s marine anti-corrosion coatings market is projected to grow at an annual rate of over 30%.
