What factors cause metal to rust despite rust-preventive treatments?

(1) Atmospheric Relative Humidity: At the same temperature, the relative humidity is defined as the percentage of the actual water vapor content in the atmosphere compared to its saturation vapor content. Below a certain relative humidity, the corrosion rate of metals is very low; however, once the relative humidity exceeds this threshold, the corrosion rate increases sharply. This relative humidity is referred to as the critical humidity. For many metals, the critical humidity ranges between 50% and 80%, with steel having a critical humidity of approximately 75%. The atmospheric relative humidity has the greatest impact on the corrosion of metals treated for rust prevention. When the atmospheric humidity exceeds the critical humidity, a thin film of water or water droplets will form on the metal surface. Huicong Surface Treatment Network: Abstract: For a long time, due to the severe high-temperature climate and acidic rain conditions in Chongqing, the metal structural components of rail tracks—particularly the Q235 ordinary steel finger plate assemblies, which are highly susceptible to rust—have suffered serious corrosion, jeopardizing the smooth operation of rail lines and the safety of train operations. This article introduces a feasible and reliable heavy-duty anti-corrosion protection approach implemented by applying zinc-nickel coatings to the PC beam finger plates of Chongqing’s light rail system, offering valuable insights for designers of public transportation facilities.
